The first written mention of the library, found in the "Hugoton Women’s Club 1914 - 1919" proceedings. The Stevens County Llibrary became tax-supported in 1924 after the general election on November 4. Originally housed in various buildings in Hugoton, a permanent round, adobe structure was built in 1934 as an N. Y. A. project. It contained approximately 800 square feet of floor space. This facility was remodeled in 1953 and housed the library until the library moved into a new building in November 1961. Located directly behind the first permanent building, it had 3200 square feet of floor space and an outdoor patio and rose garden. This facility was added onto in 1976, 1985, and most recently, in 1999. Completed in June of 2000, the latest addition created a total of 13,982 square feet of floor space.
